Businesses of all sizes should have an Emergency Response Plan

SAFETY TIPS for your business

  • Install smoke alarms in every room. They should also be outside each area and on every level of the building. Install alarms in the basement.
  • Large commercial facilities may need extra smoke alarms in large, open rooms.
  • Ideally interconnected smoke alarms should be used....so that when one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound.
  • Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
  • Different types of alarms are available  including multi-sensing, which could include smoke and carbon monoxide combined.
  • A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall.
  • Accommodate employees and/or customers who are hard-of-hearing or deaf.  These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 5 years old.
