The Best Way to Reduce Business Interruption Following a Disaster is to Plan For it NOW.

As many as 50% of businesses may never recover following a disaster, according to the latest industry research. Of the businesses that survive, the overwhelming majority of them had a preparedness plan in place. Pre-planning can serve as an insurance policy aimed at peace of mind. By developing a SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile (ERP) for your business, you minimize business interruption by having an immediate plan of action. Knowing what to do and what to expect in advance is the key to timely mitigation and can help minimize how water and fire damage can affect your business.

This is what is covered in our Emergency Ready Profile (ERP)

  • A no-cost assessment of your facility
  • A concise Profile Document that contains only critical information needed in the event of an emergency
  • A guide to help you get back into your building following a disaster
  • Establishes SERVPRO of La Grange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale as your disaster mitigation and restoration provider
  • Identification of the line of command for authorizing work to begin
  • Provides Facility details such as shut-off valve locations, priority area, and priority contact information

Preparation is a key component for making it through any size disaster, whether it’s a small water leak, a large fire, or an area flood. The best time for planning for such events is not when the event happens, but well before it happens. No one ever plans on a disaster, but you can plan for it. SERVPRO of La Grange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale can help you clean up after a storm.

We know that having an up-to-date inventory of household items and belongings helps insurance claims to settle faster. Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute for using technology to make your home inventory easier.

  • Take pictures – Create a photo record of your belongings. Capture important individual items as well as entire rooms, closets, or drawers. Label your photos with what’s pictured, where you bought it, the make or model—whatever information might be important to replacing and/or getting reimbursed for the item. Use your smartphone or digital camera—some give you the capability to put in the description of the item when saving the photo.
  • Tape it – Walk through your house or apartment videotaping and describing the contents. For example, you might describe the contents of a kitchen cabinet: “Poppies on Blue by Lenox, service for 12 that includes a dinner plate, salad plate, bowl, cup, and saucer. Purchased in 2015.”
  • Use an app – There are many mobile app options that can help you create and store a room-by-room record of your belongings.

Flood Safety - Be Ready

6/13/2022 (Permalink)

Flooded road with a car driving with headlights on. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day.

Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters.  Flooding often occurs following a hurricane, thawing snow, or several days of sustained rain.  Flash floods occur suddenly, due to rapidly rising water along a stream or low-lying area.

Know the Difference between a flood watch and a flood warning.

A flood/flash flood WATCH means a flood or flash flood is possible.

A flood/flash flood WARNING means flooding or flash flooding is already occurring or will occur soon.

Here are a few tips from Ready.gov to know about how to stay safe during a flood:

  • Find safe shelter right away.
  • Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters.
  • Remember, just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
  • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water.
  • Depending on the type of flooding:
    • Evacuate if told to do so.
    • Move to higher ground or a higher floor.
    • Stay where you are.

If you are dealing with flood, storm or water damage from thunderstorms, the experienced team at SERVPRO of La Grange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale is ready to respond quickly.  Our highly trained crews have the specialized equipment and resources to handle the job, large or small.  You can reach us at 630-920-9334.

Stay Safe While Traveling - Hotel & Motel Safety Tips

6/10/2022 (Permalink)

Hotel room with one bed a table in the background. Keep these safety tips in mind when traveling.

Vacations and business travel make hotels and motels our home away from home. It is just as important to be prepared and know what you would do in a hotel/motel emergency as it is in your own home.  Here are a few tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to stay safe while traveling:

  • Choose a hotel/motel that is protected by both smoke alarms and a fire sprinkler system.
  • When you check in, ask the front desk what the fire alarm sounds like.
  • When you enter your room, review the escape plan posted in your room.
  • Take the time to find the exits and count the number of doors between your room and the exit. Make sure the exits are unlocked. If they are locked, report it to management right away.
  • Keep your room key by your bed and take it with you if there is a fire.
  • If the alarm sounds, leave right away, closing all doors behind you. Use the stairs — never use elevators during a fire.
  • If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to your exit.

If you have any questions about fire damage restoration services, please call SERVPRO of La Grange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale at 630-920-9334.

Safety Tips for Cooking with Oil

6/9/2022 (Permalink)

Deep fryer with hot oil and an orange SERVPRO logo. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day.

Deep fry day is a favorite day in our household.  This is a day that we deep fry all types of food.  We start in the morning with homemade doughnuts and end with deep fried twinkies.  Safety is always on our mind as we work with the hot oil in the Kitchen.  Here are some cooking safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):

Safety considerations for cooking with oil

  • Always stay in the kitchen when frying on the stovetop.
  • Keep an eye on what you fry. If you see wisps of smoke or the oil smells, immediately turn off the burner and/or carefully remove the pan from the burner. Smoke is a danger sign that the oil is too hot.
  • Heat the oil slowly to the temperature you need for frying or sautéing.
  • Add food gently to the pot or pan so the oil does not splatter.
  • Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If you have a fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. Never throw water on the fire.
  • If the fire does not go out or you don’t feel comfortable sliding a lid over the pan, get everyone out of your home. Call the fire department from outside.

Tips to Avoid a Soggy Disaster in La Grange

6/9/2022 (Permalink)

Turning page of a book with an orange SERVPRO logo. Follow these tips to keep your belongings safe from water damage.

Water damage is one of the most common disasters that your home can experience.  Our homes are filled with many items that range from household items, toys, games, books, and many treasured heirlooms.  It is important to take steps to protect these items in case you experience water damage in your home.

Here are a few tips from the Insurance Information Institute to avoid a soggy disaster:

  • Store off-season and other bulk belongings in waterproof bins, especially in areas where there are plumbing pipes or that are prone to dampness, such as basements and attics.
  • Never store valuables or memorabilia where there is a risk of destruction from water. Water and dampness also bring with it the threat of mold damage.
  • Keep belongings stored on shelving off the floor in basements. In case of water seepage or sewer backup, they're less likely to get damaged.
  • Keep an up-to-date home inventory. Having a comprehensive list of your possessions will save time, trouble, and stress in case of loss from water damage.

SERVPRO of La Grange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale has a team of highly trained technicians ready to respond to your water damage emergency 24 hours a day.  Call us today at 630-920-9334.

Safety Tips for your Microwave

6/6/2022 (Permalink)

Kitchen with a microwave in a blue island with wood floors. SERVPRO of La Grange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale provides 24-hour service for any fire damage emergency.

The microwave oven is a great kitchen appliance that provides a quick and easy way to reheat a meal or warm up a cup of coffee.  It is always important to follow a few tips to prevent burns or a possible fire.

Here are some microwave safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Purchase a microwave oven that is listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Make sure to complete and return the product registration card. This way, the manufacturer can reach you if there is a recall on the product.
  • Plug the microwave oven directly into the wall outlet — never use an extension cord
  • Make sure the microwave oven is at a safe height, within easy reach of all users
  • Open food slowly, away from the face. Hot steam or the food itself can cause burns.
  • Food heats unevenly in microwave ovens. Stir and test before eating or giving to children.
  • Never heat a baby bottle in the microwave. Since a microwave oven heats unevenly, it can create hot pockets, leading to burns.

Fireplace Safety Tips

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

Stone fireplace with a big fire burning. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day.

There is nothing like warming up by a fire in the fireplace, but a dirty chimney can cause a house fire.  Creosote is a black or brown residue that can build up over time and could cause a fire.  It is important to make sure that your chimney is clean and safe for a fire.

Follow these tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for preventing creosote buildup that can cause chimney fires:

Limited air supply and unseasoned wood encourage the buildup of creosote. To avoid that buildupdo not restrict the air supply by:

  • Closing the glass doors
  • Not opening the damper wide enough
  • The longer the smoke is in the flue, the more likely it is that creosote will form
  • Do not burn unseasoned wood

Fireplace Safety

  • Keep a glass or metal screen in front of the fireplace to prevent embers or sparks from jumping out
  • Do not burn paper in your fireplace
  • Put ashes in a metal container with a lid, outside, at least three feet from your home

Storm Season is Approaching

5/24/2022 (Permalink)

Black road with a dark sky and white lightning in the background. SERVPRO of La Grange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale will respond to your storm damage emergency.

The weather in the Midwest can change quickly and bring powerful storms into our area.  Here are a few tips from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to prepare for storm season:

Tornadoes often accompany thunderstorms. Pay close attention to changing weather conditions when there is a severe thunderstorm watch or warning.

  • A severe thunderstorm watch means severe thunderstorms are possible in your area.
  • A severe thunderstorm warning means severe thunderstorms are occurring in your area.

Know the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning

Tornado watch

A tornado watch means that a tornado is possible. A tornado watch is issued when weather conditions favor the formation of tornadoes.

During a tornado watch, you should

  • Stay tuned to local radio and TV stations, or your mobile phone for further weather information.
  • Watch the weather and be prepared to take shelter immediately if conditions worsen.

Tornado warning

A tornado warning means that a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. You should immediately take shelter during a tornado warning.

Water damage can occur at any time. SERVPRO of La Grange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale wants commercial and residential property owners to know that water damage in commercial buildings and residences can not only be unsanitary, but it can also be dangerous as items that are not thoroughly dried out can cause mold. Here are some tips from the American Red Cross to follow in the event of water damage to your business or home:

  • Pump out flooded basements gradually (about one-third of the water per day) to avoid structural damage.
  • Bring all soft items outside if possible – sunlight and wind will help them dry faster
  • Throw out items that have absorbed water and cannot be cleaned or disinfected
  • Remove all drywall and insulation that has been in contact with floodwaters
  • Consider removing vinyl floor coverings and tile to allow the substructures beneath or behind them to dry
  • Keep the windows open and run fans – or keep them shut and run dehumidifiers to pull moisture out of wood floors and subfloors, beams, doors, etc.

If you experience water damage in your home or business, SERVPRO of La Grange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale wants to help. Our highly trained water restoration technicians are available 24-hours a day. Call us at 630-920-9334 to find out about our cleanup and restoration services.

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

Farm field with dark storm clouds in the background. SERVPRO of La Grange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale can handle your storm damage emergency.

Spring weather in the Midwest can bring thunderstorms and high winds into our area quickly.  It is important to be aware of the dangers that are associated with them.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration offer some information about wind warnings, watches, and advisories:

High Wind Warning: Take Action! Sustained, strong winds with even stronger gusts are happening. Seek shelter. If you are driving, keep both hands on the wheel.

High Wind Watch: Be Prepared! Sustained, strong winds are possible. Secure loose items and adjust plans as necessary so you are not caught outside.

Wind Advisory: Take Action! Strong winds are occurring but are not so strong to warrant a High Wind Warning. Objects outdoors should be secured, and caution should be taken if driving.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Take Action! A thunderstorm is happening or is imminent in the warning area. Severe thunderstorms have 58 miles per hour wind gusts and/or hail one inch or larger. Seek shelter inside a sturdy building.

Preparing for High Winds

  • Remove any dead trees or overhanging branches near structures
  • Remove loose objects outdoors, on patios, roofs, or balconies that could blow away
  • Shutter windows securely and brace outside doors
  • Bring in unsecured objects from outside and secure things that could blow away and cause damage or injury

Power Outage - Plan Now!

5/18/2022 (Permalink)

Three tall power towers with several power lines with a grey sky in the background. Plan now - be prepared for a power outage.

Power outages can happen when you least expect them.  Plan now to have what you need in the event of a power outage.  Here are some tips from the American Red Cross to stay safe:

Create a support network. Identify people who can help you stay at home or evacuate during an extended power outage. Keep a paper copy of your contact list.

Stay connected and alert. Sign up for alert systems and apps for text alerts. Have communication devices that work without home power, including a crank or battery radio, a non-cordless home phone, chargers/batteries for your cell phones and your computers.

Stock food and water. Store non-perishable food and water supplies for at least two weeks. Plan to use coolers and ice to extend food refrigeration and keep a thermometer in the fridge, freezer, or cooler to monitor the food temperature.

Know and plan for your personal and medical electrical needs. Take an inventory of your electrical needs. Consider both back up and non-power alternatives for lighting, communication, medical devices and refrigerated medicine, cooking, garage doors, locks, and elevators. Discuss a plan with your doctor for your medical needs.

Plan how to decide to stay or go. Plan how and when you will evacuate safely to maintain needs such as power-dependent medical devices. Keep your car gas tank at least half full.

Grey Water Heater SERVPRO of La Grange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale responds to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day.

Springtime is a great time to check on your water heater.  Water damage can happen quickly, and it is important to make sure that it is in good working condition.

Here are some tips to inspect and maintain your water heater from the Insurance Institute of Business and Home Safety (IBHS):

  • Inspect your anode rod every two years, or every year once the warranty has expired, to determine if it needs to be replaced.
  • Flush water heater tanks every six months to remove sediment by attaching a garden hose to the valve at the base. For safety, first turn off the power and run hot water until it is cool.
  • Get an annual inspection from a plumbing professional including the shut-off valve and all piping. Signs of broken valves and loose or wet joints and rust are a sign that more severe damage is coming.

Generator Safety Tips

5/10/2022 (Permalink)

Black storm clouds with white lightning strikes. Follow these safety tips to stay safe during a power outage.

Springtime in the Midwest can bring rain, wind, and storms.  Downed utility lines, power company blackouts, heavy winds, or thunderstorms can all lead to power outages.  Portable generators offer a temporary solution. Here are some tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) about generator safety:

  • Generators should be used in well ventilated locations outside at least 5 feet away from all doors, windows, and vent openings. Measure the 5-foot distance from the generator exhaust system to the building.
  • Never use a generator in an attached garage, even with the door open.
  • Place generators so that exhaust fumes can’t enter the home through windows, doors, or other openings in the building. The exhaust must be directed away from the building.
  • Make sure to install carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in your home. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for correct placement and mounting height.
  • Turn off generators and let them cool down before refueling. Never refuel a generator while it is hot.
  • Store fuel for the generator in a container that is intended for the purpose and is correctly labeled as such. Store the containers outside of living areas.

Know the Signs of a Tornado

5/10/2022 (Permalink)

Upside down car in a river and damaged homes in the background. SERVPRO of La Grange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale can help with storm damage restoration.

Tornadoes often accompany thunderstorms. When there are thunderstorms in your area, being prepared can help you stay safe from the storm.

Here are a few tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to be prepared for a tornado:

Know the signs of a tornado

Some tornadoes strike quickly without time for a tornado warning, so it is important to know the signs of a tornado.

Signs that a tornado may be approaching include the following:

  • Rotating funnel-shaped cloud
  • Approaching cloud of debris
  • Dark or green-colored sky
  • Large, dark, low-lying cloud
  • Large hail
  • Loud roar that sounds like a freight train

If you notice any of these signs take cover immediately.

Identify the safest place to take shelter

Although there is no completely safe place during a tornado, some locations are safer than others. Safe places include a storm cellar, a basement, or an inside room without windows on the lowest floor (such as a bathroom, closet, or center hallway).

If you have suffered storm damage caused by a tornado or a powerful thunderstorm, SERVPRO of La Grange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale can help, call us at 630-920-9334.

Cleaning Smoke damage from your Burr Ridge home

7/22/2019 (Permalink)

Proper Smoke and Soot cleaning after a fire is imperative

Cleaning Smoke and Soot from your home after a fire:

Smoke and soot damage is a serious problem after a fire. Depending on what burned, the combustion can create dangerous and toxic byproducts. Inhaling this noxious mixture sometimes results in health issues, including severe injury or death. More people die during a fire from smoke inhalation than any burns inflicted.

Hidden smoke damage corrodes tarnishes, etches, and deteriorates metals, woods, glass, and other surfaces. It invades and ruins porous materials like insulation and carpeting over time. Its odor lingers, trapped in the tiny bits of combusted plastic, wood, fabric, and a host of other organic and inorganic building materials and contents inside the burned home.

It is critical that our technicians locate and evaluate smoke damage wherever it migrates. A plan to remove the smoke damage or seal it to prevent continuous vaporization is crucial.

After the professional cleaning and remediation of smoke damage, the final task is often odor removal. Airing out of spaces helps somewhat, but the odiferous particles remain suspended and trapped in walls and cavities, furnishings, materials and other places. Advanced technology that replicates the combustion known as thermal fogging shows good results in odor elimination. So does hydroxyl generation and other oxidative processes. These solutions work by sending other particles into the air to seek out odor molecules; They attach to the odor particles and neutralize the smell through a chemical conversion that permanently eliminates the stench.

If your home experiences fire or smoke damage, connect immediately with SERVPRO of LaGrange/Burr Ride/Hinsdale for fast and lasting results. You can count on our team to restore your property to pre-damage condition. Call us today at (630) 920-9334. “Like it never even happened.”

Drying out a damp basement

7/14/2019 (Permalink)

Moisture levels are monitored frequently during the drying process.

If you have moisture in your basement, it can be a real headache for any homeowner. It is important to treat and dry any wet areas properly to prevent potential contamination and/or mold.

One important aspect of our work is helping restore air quality in your home. We use air scrubbers and negative air machines to clean the air in your house and reduce the presence of spores. Air scrubbers are portable filtration systems that play a vital role in improving air quality. The scrubbers draw air through a series of powerful HEPA filters that trap mold spores as small as 0.3 microns and remove them from the air. The result is cleaner air with less fungal spores in it.

SERVPRO technicians oversee the drying out of your home or contaminated rooms after any mold remediation. Getting your home and belongings dry to their normal level of moisture content is vital. Our experts have dehumidifiers on hand to bring down the humidity in the air, and air movers for drying out specific areas.

Do not struggle with trying to deal with a moisture problem or a mold outbreak. Call SERVPRO of LaGrange/Burr Ridge/Hinsdale at (630) 920-9334 today for assistance.

Lightning Safety

7/13/2019 (Permalink)

An article on weather.gov provided some recent statistics on how to stay safe when lightning is your area.  Following these precautions when a storm is nearby, and lightning or thunder is present will help insure your safety:

There is no safe place outside when thunderstorms are in the area. If you hear thunder, you are likely within striking distance of the storm. Just remember, When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors. Too many people wait far too long to get to a safe place when thunderstorms approach. Unfortunately, these delayed actions lead to many of the lightning deaths and injuries in the United States.

There is little you can do to substantially reduce your risk if you are outside in a thunderstorm. The only completely safe action is to get inside a safe building or vehicle.

If you absolutely cannot get to safety, you can slightly lessen the threat of being struck with the following tips.

  • Avoid open fields, the top of a hill or a ridge top.
  • Stay away from tall, isolated trees or other tall objects. If you are in a forest, stay near a lower stand of trees.
  • If you are in a group, spread out to avoid the current traveling between group members.
  • If you are camping in an open area, set up camp in a valley, ravine or other low area. Remember, a tent offers NO protection from lighting.
  • Stay away from water, wet items, such as ropes, and metal objects, such as fences and poles. Water and metal do not attract lightning but they are excellent conductors of electricity. The current from a lightning flash will easily travel for long distances.

Why calling an expert is important after water damage occurs

7/13/2019 (Permalink)

Call the SERVPRO experts. We're ready to help!

Why is calling a certified professional necessary after water damage?

Homeowners know that moisture is often the enemy, capable of penetrating into just about any space, and taking advantage of every little crack and structural problem. No matter how moisture gets into a building or home, the response should be the same. Bring in SERVPRO of LaGrange/Burr Ridge/Hinsdale as soon as possible to clean the home, dry it, and ensure there are no lingering health threats once the moisture is gone.

If water has entered the home through a contaminated source, don’t try to handle it on your own. Floods and sewage backflows contain a variety of deadly bacteria, viruses and fungi, and even momentary skin contact can leave a person seriously ill. A certified water damage restoration service like SERVPRO of LaGrange/Burr Ridge/Hinsdale not only has the tools to eliminate the moisture, we have the protective equipment to remain free from harm.

Our restoration technicians have technology that makes a difference. These include powerful vacuums and pumping systems, high volume air movers, dehumidifiers, heat injectors, moisture meters, and a number of detergents formulated for destroying fungi and other microbial threats. While our technicians work on the damaged area, disposing of compromised materials, and drying the rest, they will also destroy all mold and microbial colonies. This is the only way to ensure a home is safe to live in, and a business safe to work in; any other cleaning method is a dangerous gamble.

SERVPRO of LaGrange/Burr Ridge/Hinsdale utilizes advanced equipment and technology to quicken the restoration time and to minimize cost. We proudly serve our community and surrounding areas with 24/7 emergency availability. Give us a call today! (630) 920-9334.

Storm Warning vs Storm Watch

7/8/2019 (Permalink)

Storm warning vs Storm watch, (photo courtesy of weather.gov)

There have been a high number of storm warnings lately affecting a wide area around Hinsdale, Western Springs, Burr Ridge and LaGrange. If you are unfamiliar with the difference between a flash flood warning, flood warning, and flood advisory; then read below!

According to noaa.gov:

The difference between a Flood Watch and a Flood Warning issued by the National Weather Service is:

  • Flash Flood Warning: Take Action! A Flash Flood Warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring. If you are in a flood prone area move immediately to high ground. A flash flood is a sudden violent flood that can take from minutes to hours to develop. It is even possible to experience a flash flood in areas not immediately receiving rain.

  • Flood Warning: Take Action! A Flood Warning is issued when the hazardous weather event is imminent or already happening. A Flood Warning is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring.

  • Flood Watch: Be Prepared: A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for a specific hazardous weather event to occur. A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.

  • Flood Advisory: Be Aware: An Flood Advisory is issued when a specific weather event that is forecast to occur may become a nuisance. A Flood Advisory is issued when flooding is not expected to be bad enough to issue a warning. However, it may cause significant inconvenience, and if caution is not exercised, it could lead to situations that may threaten life and/or property.

Grill Safety Tips

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

according to The National Fire Protection Association

According to the National Fire Protection Agency, on average, 16,600 people per year visit the emergency room because of injuries involving grills. With this in mind, SERVPRO of LaGrange/Burr Ridge/Hinsdale recommends following some steps to insure proper grill maintenance and operation.

Before using your gas grill you should check for leaks and breaks in the line. Once you’re certain the grill is safe to use, move your grill away from your home or any decks or other structures that could be flammable. Low hanging tree branches or overhangs can be especially hazardous. Make sure that the grill is on a stable, flat surface. and watch to see that children and pets are kept away from the grilling area. Clean the grill according to the manufacturers guidelines.  Use a grill brush if necessary to remove grease buildup on the grate of the grill. While your grill is in use, never leave it unattended and keep a fire extinguisher on hand.

By following these tips, you should have a safe and enjoyable BBQ season!

Commercial Carpet Cleaning in LaGrange, IL

We also offer a range of specialized cleaning methods:

  • Bonnet Cleaning: A less aggressive method for short piled carpets.
  • Hot Water Extraction: A deeper cleaning method for all carpet types.
  • Deluxe Precondition and Rinse: Helps restore deeply soiled areas.
  • Showcase Premier Cleaning: The most thorough cleaning method in the industry.
  • Dry Cleaning: When color-fastness is an issue.

Preventative Maintenance

Carpets act as a filter, trapping dust, dirt, gases, animal hair, and other soils. All carpet manufacturers agree on actions you can take between carpet cleanings to increase the life span of your carpet.

IICRC states that 79% of soil in carpet is dry soil. Vacuuming is a key component to proper care and maintenance of carpet.

Preventative maintenance actions include:

  • Regular vacuuming
  • Spot removal
  • Moving furniture to change traffic patterns
  • Using walk-off mats to limit the amount of soil tracked onto the carpet

Professional Cleaning

Our professional cleaning can address moderate and heavy soil conditions in your carpets. How often you’ll need professional cleaning depends on soil build-up, traffic, type and color of carpeting. A good rule of thumb would be to professionally clean your carpet every 12 months. The best advice is to clean carpets before they become totally saturated with soil. If you wait until carpets look really dirty, the carpets may never be restored to their former appearance. Dirt builds up in layers, and when a carpet looks dirty you are only seeing the dirt at the tips of the fibers. More dirt is hiding below the surface down near the base of the pile, causing damage to the carpet. When a carpet is saturated with dirt, the soil has penetrated crevices and has become firmly lodged.

Small business fire safety tips

7/2/2019 (Permalink)

Businesses of all sizes should have an Emergency Response Plan

SAFETY TIPS for your business

  • Install smoke alarms in every room. They should also be outside each area and on every level of the building. Install alarms in the basement.
  • Large commercial facilities may need extra smoke alarms in large, open rooms.
  • Ideally interconnected smoke alarms should be used....so that when one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound.
  • Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
  • Different types of alarms are available  including multi-sensing, which could include smoke and carbon monoxide combined.
  • A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall.
  • Accommodate employees and/or customers who are hard-of-hearing or deaf.  These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 5 years old.

SERVPRO of LaGrange/Burr Ridge/Hinsdale provides a free Emergency Ready Profile, which includes a telephone application. This powerful resource is available to property managers, building owners, and company safety representatives.

Sewage Back Up

3/28/2019 (Permalink)

Toilet overflowing due to sewage back up in Willowbrook.

Sewage Back Up should be handled with care.... unlike fresh water, when a sewage line or extractor pump leaves contaminated water in your home or business, bacteria and other harmful contaminants could be present that can lead to health problems.
For homes the actual damage may not be so bad, and it can leave behind some not so pleasant smells....but for larger buildings that may be located in a city or downtown area, damage can come in all sizes, particularly when you are dealing with a main city sewage line!

These can cause not only terrible odors, but huge cleanups as well.  Whether a small or large scale backup, SERVPRO of LaGrange/Burr Ridge/Hinsdale is ready to dive in to get the waste out!

Extracting whatever kind of waste is present is the first priority, followed by extreme power washing to make sure no residue is left behind.  Finally, after everything is washed and wiped down its time to get rid of that smell.  Using special chemicals that are made to rid the area of the smell and keep it that way are the specialty of SERVPRO of LaGrange/Burr Ridge/Hinsdale, so let us do the dirty work!

Kitchen fire in Hinsdale Townhome

3/27/2019 (Permalink)

The entire kitchen of this townhome was subject to a fire that started in the garbage can

Every 65 seconds a fire at a structure is reported, according to the National Fire Protection Association. When the alarm goes off, fire departments plus emergency responders will answer the call for help with action that is decisive and fast.

When the smoke clears, SERVPRO of LaGrange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale's fire restoration team will stand ready to help with the same kind of quick response, any time of day or night.

**The golden hours of recovery are within the first day or two after fire damage has occurred.

The smoke and acidic soot damage which is often produced when fires are extinguished will accelerate the corrosion and deterioration of the components of the building and its vital assets. To make matters worse, fires are most often extinguished with water or dry chemicals. The toxic smoke odor left behind must also be neutralized and deodorized.

The process of fire damage restoration will include mitigating damage, cleaning up smoke damage and water restoration as fast as possible once the damage has occurred. Besides the visual damage to the structure, the contents inside the structure have to be looked at for recovery based upon several factors which include:

- Cost of replacement vs. cost of restoration

- Effect of heat and smoke

- Loss of value

- Loss of use

- Lowered life expectancy

- Sentimental value

SERVPRO’s fire restoration services can include demolition, emergency board up, thermal deodorization to mitigate damage from smoke, soot removal film application, and total reconstruction.

Fire Department Support Services We’ll also work closely with the fire department and many times will be called into help with fire damage efforts once the fire is extinguished. Support services include the following:

- Emergency site containment and board up services. This includes securing the property and preserving the scene from any more smoke and fire damage.

- Arson investigators work with us to help us to safely secure evidence, storage and transport and debris manipulation.

- Moving of materials to assist in the secure safe entry of the fire department and authorized personnel in the entire process of restoration.

- Provide dumpsters, lighting, emergency power and more.

Fire damage needs to be taken care of right away, so give us a call at SERVPRO of LaGrange / Burr Ridge / Hinsdale at (708) 482-9334 or (630) 920-9334 .

We will come to your property to evaluate damage and begin the process of fire restoration.

Don't let Frozen Pipes cause damage this winter!

12/6/2018 (Permalink)

Frozen pipes can burst and can pump out over 250 gallons of water per day

Almost 250,000 families have damage in their homes every winter, all because of water damage that results from frozen pipes.

Recovering from the damage is not as simple as calling a plumber.  Extreme damage can take place as rapidly from even a small crack in a pipe (which can spew up to 250 gallons of water a day!)  Consequently, damages can occur throughout a house and can affect ceilings, walls, and floors.

By taking a few precautions, you can avoid the mess, money and frustration that this process can cause.

Before the cold hits:

Insulate pipes in your home's crawl spaces and attic. These areas are most susceptible to freezing. Don't forget that the more insulation you use, the less chance your pipes will freeze.

Seal leaks that allow cold air inside near where pipes are located. Look for any air leaks around electrical wiring, dryer vents and pipes. Properly use caulk or insulation to keep the cold out and the heat in.

Disconnect water and garden hoses.

If your pipes freeze:

Call SERVPRO of LaGrange/Burr Ridge/Hinsdale to help!  We are available 24/7 and can be reached at (630) 920-9334.  We are experts and are prepared to help in your time of need.

Frequently Asked Questions about Mold

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

Mold in the laundry room of a home in Western Springs.

Mold can be difficult to detect, and most homeowners don't even know it's growing until significant damage has already occurred. Answers to these questions might help to prevent mold from growing in your home in the future.

When Does Mold Grow Most Commonly?

Mold damage is most common in the spring and autumn months when rainfall is still common, but temperatures are more desirable for the mold. Mold grows when it's warmest and wettest, but mold can grow at any time of year.

Can Mold Grow Without Water Damage?

Although much of the mold we deal with comes as a side effect of water damage, standing water can certainly create an environment for mold growth. Mold can find sufficient amounts of water from mild spills, heightened levels of humidity, or even just the regular moisture in your home.

What Can I Do to Prevent Future Mold Damage?

Making sure that your water systems are secure and leaks are sealed is the most important step in stopping future mold damage. Past that, talk to a SERVPRO representative to learn about mold-resistant paints and finishes that we can apply to help ward off mold even if conditions do go awry.

Why Do I Need a Professional Remediation Service?

Some homeowners may assume that mold cleanup is a simple job, and choose to forgo hiring professionals for it. However, if you don't hire a certified company, you may end up doing more harm than good, spreading mold damage to other surfaces and perhaps giving it a fresh food and water source to feed on. Also, mold may be hazardous to your health and necessitates some advanced safety measures.
